A homegoing celebration for John Henry Wyatt was held Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Mr. Wyatt was born March 5, 1941 to the late Patrick Henry Wyatt Sr. and the late Daisy Kidd Wyatt in Shreveport and passed away Sunday, Sept. 15.
John was brought up in a Christian home and accepted Christ at an early age. He was baptized at St. Clair Baptist Church by the late Rev. J.T. Stroman and later joined Greater New Hope Baptist Church in Alexandria.
After relocating to Grambling, Wyatt joined the Mount Zion Baptist Church.
He graduated from Jasper Henderson High School in Chatham in 1959. John attended Grambling State University earning a B.S. degree in 1963.
Wyatt completed the his M.A. degree at Southern University in Baton Rouge and post master’s work at Northwestern State University, Xavier University, and Indiana University.
John devoted 34 years in the field of education. He served in positions as a teacher, assistant principal, acting principal, and supervisor in the Avoyelles Parish School System. He was a life member of many professional, civic, and social organizations.
Wyatt shared his knowledge as an adjunct professor at GSU for two years. The educator taught in the Departments of English and History.
Writing was among his many talents. He was the author of Innervisions, a Book of Poetry, which was published in 2004. Wyatt’s poetry has appeared in the Louisiana Review and in several anthologies.
John was joined in Holy matrimony to Theresa Lewis on January 13, 1999.
He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Theresa, and three daughters: Tania L. Monette (Tony) Cheradi A. Wilson (Jerome) of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Kim S. Wyatt of Dallas, Texas; two sisters: Dorothy Hicks and Minnie Grant; one brother, Wilbert Kelley; six grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and host of other relatives and friends.
