Volleyball team splits on Senior Night

Volleyball head coach Demetria Keys-Johnson receives a gift Monday night from the seniors on this year’s squad.

The Grambling State Lady Tigers split a pair of matches as GSU hosted Texas Southern and Prairie View on Senior Night.

MATCH 1

The Grambling State Lady Tigers volleyball team (10-22, overall), fell short 3-1 to Texas Southern Monday (Oct. 29), as Grambling kicked off its 2018 Homecoming Week.

The Lady Tigers were led by junior Chasity Nicks with 17 kills on 32 attacks, along with a.344 hitting percentage.

However, it wasn’t enough to hold off SWAC opponent as TSU recorded the victory.

Senior Kevreion Ward registered 14 kills along with seven digs, while senior Talicia Lang had a double-double night with 13 digs and 10 kills.

Senior L’Muriell Tower led the assists column with a team-high 25 assists. Freshman Shelia Borders added 21 assists and 10 digs on the night.

Alexis Southern led Texas Southern with 12 kills and seven digs, with Jada Hall notching 10 kills.

Alyssa Chuidian had a double-double for TSU, with 21 assists and 13 digs.

Grambling finished the night with 62 kills on 156 total attacks.    

MATCH 2

GSU wrapped up their 2018 home game stand, as they honored seven players during Senior Night.

The Lady Tigers recorded a 3-2 victory over Prairie View A&M at GSU Men’s Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

The Lady Tigers started off rapidly, taking the two opening sets 25-17, 25-16.

The Lady Panthers responded claiming sets three and four 25-18 and 25-13. The fifth set became the deciding factor on the evening as the Lady Tigers claimed a 15-5 win.

Chasity Nicks paced the Lady Tigers with 12 kills, on 35 total attacks, for a .257 hitting percentage.

Jaivieanna Jones added 11 kills, while Tess Reynolds chipped in 10 kills off the bench.

L’Muriell Thrower had a double-double on the night with 22 assists and 11 digs, with Shelia Borders tallying 21 assists.

Graduate student Erineka Mollere recorded a team-high 17 digs as Kevreion Ward added 12 digs.

GSU finished the night with 53 kills, on 160 total team attacks with an .206 hitting percentage.

The Lady Panthers, were led by Tamaira Armstrong with 15 kills and 15 digs tallying a double-double.

Erica Jimenez had a match-high 29 assists, while Christen Augustine had a match-high 27 digs.

The Lady Tigers will conclude the season on the road starting Sunday 5 p.m.  at rival Southern University and then finishing off the year at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday, Nov. 8.

The 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament begins Nov. 16 in Itta Bena, Miss.
