GSU professor of 25 years remembered

Funeral Services for Dr. Hattie Logan Perkins will be held on Friday, March 18 at 11 a.m. at the King's Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston, Louisiana.  She passed away Sunday, March 13 after a lengthy illness.

The wake service will be held today, (March 17) at 6  p.m. to 8 p.m. at the King's Funeral Home Chapel.

Dr. Perkins was born to parents Wyatt T. Logan Sr. and Hattie E. Edwards of Addison, Texas on June 27, 1921.

She married Lee Perkins on May 16, 1948.

She worked at Grambling Laboratory High School from 1960-1964 and arrived at Grambling State University to take on a teaching job from 1964-1985. 

Dr. Perkins was a recipient of various awards that included, but not limited to Alpha Kappa Alpha, Links Golden Member Award, Epsilon Psi Omega Golden Soror Award, fifth president of the Links Monroe-Grambling Chapter, Western Colorado University Award of Honor, Commissioner for the Housing Authority Award and the list goes on.

Dr. Perkins received a bachelors degree in English from Samuel Houston in 1943, a masters in education from Prairie View in 1956, a M.Ed. in curriculum development from the University of Denver in 1959 and a Ph.D. in humanities from Western Colorado University in 1972.

Her organization memberships included Alpha Kappa Alpha-May 15, 1942 (life member October 9, 1967), platinum member Monroe-Grambling Chapter Links, Inc. (founding member-1946) and Louisiana Education Association 1963.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lee L. Perkins, her parents, nine siblings: Arelene, Azalene, John Henry, Allie, Wyatt, Willie May, Euodias, William and Edward.

 She is survived by a niece Beverly Jo McKiever (Willard) of DeSoto, Texas, great nephews Jethro Pugh III, Steven Logan, Christopher Thompson, Charles Thompson, Euodias Thompson, and great nieces Jethrolyn Jo Pugh, Shirley Higgs, Bernadette Harvey, member of the family Virginia “Franchun” Thomas, and her girls: Dr. Joyce Montgomery-Scott, Mae D. Conley and a host of other relatives and friends. Special friend to her is Thelma Richardson.
