“Wait a minute, y’all. I am not dying,” said KGRM Radio Station Manager Joyce Evans Tuesday morning.Evans received Grambling State’s first Employee Recognition Award.
University President Dr. Frank Pogue said that the award was created to express appreciation for people who not only take an interest in GSU, but who also go out of their way for the school.
Evans received the certificate in her honor and also an appreciation cake.
Dr. Pogue told her that she must eat the entire cake by herself.
“This is wonderful. To get a raise like this,” Evans quipped to a radio station filled with laughter, as campus representatives supported her receipt of the award.
Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement Dr. Kenoye Eke said that Evans is “the official voice of Grambling State University.”
In response, Evans voiced what GSU means to her.
“I’m all about the students,” Evans said. “I know what an HBCU is about.”
Evans added that students need to be trained so that they can gain employment, pay into the system and help older citizens retire.
Interim Dean of Professional Studies Dr. Rama Tunuguntla boasted of the successes of students who worked with Evans.
Some of these success stories include graduates Brea Douglas and Kayla Williams.
Douglas interned in the White House’s Office of Correspondence.
Williams landed a job at KTVE as a news reporter while still studying at GSU.
“She gets all of the potential out of those who she works with,” said Justin Anderson, a mass communication senior from Arcadia.
Anderson added that Evans is a good leader whose hard work is deserving of many more awards.
