Alumni chapter readies for Classic

The Kansas City Alumni Chapter of Grambling State University is preparing to host “The Missouri Classic Weekend.”

On Sept. 14 Arrowhead Stadium will host the 2013 Missouri Classic football game featuring the Grambling State University Tigers and Lincoln University Blue Tigers.

The GSU Tigers are one of the most successful Historical Black College Universities in the history of NCAA Division I and SWAC conferences. GSU, under the leadership of legendary coach Eddie Robinson, launched more than 100 football players into the National Football League.

On that list of NFL players is Kansas City Chief Hall of Fame inductee and Grambling State alumnus Buck Buchanan. The late Buchanan is scheduled to be honored during the weekend of events.

After a 41 year absence, the World Famed Tiger Marching Band and GSU football team return to Kansas City, the “City of Fountains.” Members of the local alumni chapter promise that the weekend will be filled with Kansas City history, pride and hospitality.

The GSU alumni events are scheduled to show the best of Kansas City tradition,” said officials of the Grambling Alumni Kansas City Chapter.

The week of events will begin with a pep rally on Sunday, Sept. 8 on 18th & Vine, followed by “The Official Tiger Tuesday.” This event, hosted by Grambling alumni, will be held Sept. 10 at Rain Executive Lounge, 8015 Troost Ave.

On Friday, Sept. 13, Grambling alumni will host two events: “Two-Stepping on the Vine,” which includes the Grambling Welcoming Reception at the American Jazz Museum at the Negro League Atrium and Patio; and the “Ultimate College Party” for the youth and college students in the Kansas City area, to be held at the College Basketball Experience in Power & Light District.

The Missouri Classic football game will start at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 14, and will be followed by the Official After-Party at 9 p.m. at the historic Firestone building at 20th Grand Ave..
