Lewis Matthews III is a junior linebacker for Grambling State University’s football team.
The 5’10”, 220-pound is from Ferriday where he graduated from Ferriday High School.
Q: What is a typical day like, preparing for the season?
A: A typical day starts mentally. Getting my mind ready to first compete with self to be the best Lewis/G-Man that I could possibly be. Treating every day at practice like the season starts the following day. Giving more than 100% proving that I deserve this, and that I deserve to be here. The way you practice is how you will perform, So I put in the hard work and dedication to prepare for a successful season.
Q: With first game only a few days away, how are you preparing physically and mentally coming off from our Spring Season?
A: I’m preparing physically by working out and treating my body to make sure I’m strong and healthy so that I remain injury free and able to successfully preform on the field. I’m Mentally preparing by leaving the Spring all in the past. I’m not looking backward only forward but taking in all mistakes we made in the spring and fixing them so were not bringing them into the season.
Q: Which sport is your favorite to play and why?
A: Even though I like basketball, of course Football is my Favorite. I’ve been play peewee league football since being older enough to play and I grew up watching football and grew a strong love for the physical game. The game of football allows me to show my physical skills and the ability to make plays physically and mentally.
Q: Why are you so passionate about playing football?
A: I’m so passionate about playing football because I truly have love for the sport and playing at this level and being great at it, opens doors and opportunities to play football on a professional level. Playing in the NFL would be a dream come true, so I give it my all. I play the game with my heart, mind body and soul.
Q: Which strengths do you believe you have that make you a great athlete?
A: I have the strength of a TIGER. I’m strong, powerful, determined, aggressive and a Leader. Having those strengths makes me a great athlete.
Q: What do you believe to be one of your weaknesses and what are you doing to improve it?
A: Self-Motivation use to be a weakness for me but today I see no weakness because everyday I’m working on improving myself to be the best me, staying locked in on my future goals.
Q: Is there a coach or athlete that you look up to as a role model and why?
A: My role model is Devin White. He’s my role model because he too is a linebacker, went to college played football. He’s a country guy and loves the game of football.
Q: Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of football?
A: Outside of football, I enjoy riding 4wheelers, going hunting and traveling to different places with family and friends.
Q: Are there any short-term goals you'd like to accomplish in the next few months to a couple of years?
A: My short-term goals are to Graduate in the Spring and attend Grad School
Q: What do you see yourself accomplishing in five to ten years?
A: In the next 5 to ten years, I see myself hopefully playing football in the NFL, but if all else fails, I see myself have a successful career and being a great family man.
Q: Rank the top five priorities currently in your life.
A: My Top 5 priorities currently in life are: Serving God, Self-Love, Family, Education and Football in that order.
