On Feb. 14 the Delta Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted a Women’s Empowerment seminar in the Favrot Student Union Theater.

The purpose of the event was to encourage young women on Grambling State University’s campus to be and love their true selves.

The members of the Delta Iota Chapter provided mini gift bags for each attendee that contained hand written notes of encouragement, alongside pieces of candy.

Students were given a safe space to express themselves and open up about different topics including self love, relationships, work ethic, etc.

“The women’s empowerment program was enlightening. It showed me no matter the classification, skin tone, age, Black women have a lot in common,” said Ayeisha Gipson, a senior attendee at the event. “I enjoyed the fact that there was a space where we can share intimate stories and give words of encouragement.”

Events like this are very important to college women.

It provides reassurance that there can be multiple women in power and women of color coexisting and encouraging each other along their journeys.

In such a competitive day in age, women, especially Black women should take every opportunity to uplift one another.

There are enough obstacles that Black women have to face on a daily basis, another black woman shouldn’t be another one of those obstacles.

“We wanted to really emphasize the importance of loving yourself. It felt amazing to offer up a safe space for the women of GSU. A space where we were able to speak on sensitive topics and be vulnerable amongst other women,” Taneicia Herring, a member of the Delta Iota chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., said.
