Give them the recognition they deserve

March 1-31 we highlight and celebrate the contributions of women to events in history and in contemporary times.
When asked “What women in history do you think has not received the recognition she deserves and why?” junior Johnathon Thibodeaux, a political science major, believes that Shirley Chisholm, an American politician, educator and author, isn’t getting the recognition that she deserves.
Shirley Chisolm was the first African American women in Congress in 1968. She also was the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president of the United States in 1972. Chisholm was a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971.
“She should be discussed in the same sense as Martin Luther King Jr.,” Thibodeaux stated.
Shirley Chisholm dared to be a catalyst of change in politics and civil rights, and that is what she is remember for.
Maiya McNeal, a junior majored in biology, chose a woman in a different arena. “There are so many women out there that deserve to be acknowledged,” McNeal said. “But if I had to pick just one I would say Dorothy Dandridge. She was the first African American to be nominated for an Academy Award for best actress.”
Dorthy Dandrige indeed was the first African American to get nominated for an Oscar for best actress.
Dandrige started performing with her sister, Vivian as a song- and- dance team called the wonder of children. In 1930 Dandrige moved to Los Angeles, California with her family were she and her sister found success with her new musical group the “Dandridge sister.”.Much after moving Dandrige started getting small roles in a number of films her biggest film came out in 1954 she starred as the eponymous lead in Carmen Jones. The film catapulted her to the heights of stardom.
“Dorthy Dandrige was underrated she was just as big as Marilyn Monroe she should be talked about more.” McNeal stated. These two women haven’t received the recognition that they deserve, since it is Womens History Month we celebrate and honor both Shirley Chisholm and,  Dorthy Dandrige two phenomenal women.
