Shoulders were shimmying, necks were rolling, legs were kicking, hands were clapping in a packed T.H. Harris Auditorium this past Thursday evening as the Favrot Student Union Board’s Hospitality Committee hosted a “Who Run It?” Stroll Off.
The Stroll Off featured several Greek and non-Greek organizations. Students were screaming and dancing while the organizations strolled and stepped to a variety of songs.
“We decided to do a Stroll Off because we thought it would be a fun event to kick off the semester for the student body”, Taja Tillman, co-chair of the Hospitality Committee, said.
Students were in an uproar as members from nearly every Greek fraternity and sorority as well as non-Greeks performed.
The competition got more intense as more organizations performed. Of course when “Knuck If You Buck” came on, the entire auditorium rose to their feet. Nearly every organization had a line strolling through the aisles. The crowd had many opportunities to dance as DJ Twinz played music for the intermission. One of the head-turning events of the night was when the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. made an interesting entrance. Unexpectedly, they strolled in and immediately everyone brought out their phones to take photos.
“The atmosphere was great. You could literally feel the energy from the crowd as well as the performers,” Kayana Washington-Williams, a student in attendance stated.
The first place title went to the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This isn’t the first time the Alphas have came in first place. They were also the first place at the Homecoming step show. There were nine organizations represented during the Stroll Off.
“It felt good to win,” the Alphas said. “We did not worry about all the extra stuff happening, we just put on a show. We had one job to do and that was to win as we do every time we get on stage whether it is a stroll off or step show.”
The men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. came in second and the men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. received third place.
The Stroll Off was just a snippet of what students will see during this year’s step show during “Tigerfest”.
“I would like to thank all of the organizations who participated in our ‘Who Run It’ event,” Shamya Larkins, the chair of the Hospitality committee, said.
“I wish that more organizations would have participated. However, it was a really great event and and I was extremely pleased with the turn out. I truly wasn’t expecting the turnout to be as great as it was.”
