The Grambling State University Police Department has released the 2018 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.
The statistics published in the report show a trend in more criminal incidents, arrests, judicial referrals and disciplinary actions.
The 2017 academic year saw an increase in homicides, both forcible and non-forcible sexual offenses, vandalism, simple assaults and motor vehicle theft. Other crimes have seen only a slight decrease in reported incidents such as burglary, simple assault, drug and weapon violations.
In the report, criminal incidents that occur on GSU’s campus are divided into two categories, On Campus and Campus Housing. Incidents reported on campus are separate from incidents reported in campus housing.
Burglary still remains the highest reported crime in 2017 for both on campus and in the residential halls. Vandalism is also on the rise where incidents have jumped from one reported case in 2016 to 15 in 2017. Simple assault dropped from 38 incidents in 2016 to 23 in 2017, arson still remains at 0 reported cases for the past 4 years. Aggravated assault has dropped to 4 reported cases in 2017 when compared to 2016 with a reported 12.
Domestic and dating violence, although comparatively low, still is present both on campus and in campus housing.
Numerous arrest were made last year for both drug and weapons violations on university property. These violations include drug or weapon possession and drug distribution. A total of 25 arrests were made based on these violations alone for 2017.
In the report, campus security actively encourages victims of crime to seek help. Campus safety programs are included in the report to inform and encourage students to be proactive in safeguarding their overall experience while studying at the university.
Programmed events meant to supplement campus security in 2017 included “Young, Wild and Free”, “8 Simple Rules” and “The Sex Panel” which informed students about securing dorm rooms, drinking, driving and drug use, self-defense, safe sex and sexually transmitted diseases.
