Grambling volleyballers fall to Southern in home opener

The Grambling State University Lady Volleyball team started the 2018 season with 21 straight road games. The Lady Tigers hosted their first home game at Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center against SWAC rival Southern University.

The Lady Jaguars (4-13 overall, 3-5 SWAC) took three consecutive games against the Lady Tigers. The final scores of the matches were 25-14, 25-22, 25-12.
 The Lady Tigers Chasity Nicks led the Grambling State offense with 12 kills, while L’Muriell Thrower handed out 15 assists and Sheila Borders added 8 assist.

Erineka Mollere led the defense with 10 digs while L’Muriell Thrower and Talicia Lang both added 4 digs to the scorecard.  

Southern’s Shelby Jolly and Jada Carter led the Lady Jaguars with 9 kills each.  Princess Stark dished out 18 assists, while Vaterra Calais recorded 12. On the defensive side of the ball the Lady Jaguars’ Bailey Jefferson produced 11 digs, and Jada Carter added 8.

Overall, the Lady Tigers fell to 5-17, and 3-5 SWAC.  GSU finished the night with 30 kills, 26 assist, 27 errors, and 103 attacks.

The Lady Jaguars hit .302 for the match and finished with 37 digs, 35 assists, and 11.5 team blocks and three service aces.

The Lady Tigers returns to action tonight, against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The match sis et for 6 p.m.
