MTV holds annual awards

The MTV Movie Awards is a film show presented annually on MTV. All of the nominees for the award show are decided by producers and MTV executives, however, the winners are picked online by the general public and fans.

This year, the MTV Movie Awards were held on Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m. EST at the Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank, California.

To start off the show, two hilariously mismatched hosts Kevin Hart and Dewayne Johnson (known as The Rock) entered the Warner Brother’ parking lot in full Mad Max: Fury Road mode. While wearing Max’s medal muzzle face mask, Hart entered the scene strapped to a car while Johnson played the role of the Doof Warrior with a flaming guitar. It was a perfect opening act for the show that was entertaining and really grabbed the audience’s attention.

Even though the hosts had a fire opening act, all good things eventually come to an end. After their epic entrance, Hart and Johnson kicked off the show by joking with each other and going back and forth. They were asking each other what they were doing back in 1992 and this lead to a series of sexual jokes that the crowd, nor viewers found funny. Incorporating the American Pie movie, Hart associated the movie with a “d*ck joke”that he thought would be trending on Twitter but because of the joke not bring funny or impressive.

After winning the Best Virtual Performance award at the ceremony, Amy Pochler accepted the award for Joy in Inside Out. Her acceptance speech was heart felt and very humbling. She will be remembered as one of the only people to dress fairly normal as she rocked a Mickey Mouse shirt and dark jeans.

As the actor, Will Smith was awarded the Generations Award and for that the comedy rap group, The Lonely Island, later took the stage in heavily-patterned clothing overall from the 90’s to pay tribute to the actor, artist and producer.

They performed Will Smith’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” the theme of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, “Summertime, “The Men in Black theme (also had dancers) and “Get Jiggy Wit.” It was definitely one of the funniest, but enjoyable performances of MTV history.

There were several nominees for each category and every winner proved to be a fan favorite since the general public voted.

Just to name a few of the winners from the night: taking the win for Best Female Performance was Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road, Best Virtual Performance was won by my Poehler in Inside Out, Chris Pratt won Best Action Performance for this role in Jurassic World, the True Story award was won by the movie Straight Outta Compton, Best Comedic Performance was won by Ryan Reynolds in his hilarious role in Deadpool, Leonardo DiCaprio took home the award for the Best Male Performance in the movie, The Revenant, and Daisy Ridley took home the Breakthrough Performance for her role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
