G-Men ready for first SWAC Challenge

The Grambling Tigers will bring their balanced attack offense on the road against Southwestern Athletic Conference foe Alabama State Hornets in the Prince Hall Masons Americanism Football Classic in their conference opener. Grambling (0-2) hasn’t beaten Alabama State (0-2) since 2010.

Grambling offense caught fire scoring 29 fourth quarter points in last week’s home opener. Quarterback Jonathon Williams completed 30 of 47 passing  attempts for 326 yards three touchdowns and one interception, including connection with 10 different receivers.

Williams was also the Tigers leading rusher, rushing for 82 yards, including a touchdown run. The Tigers rushed for 226 yards and three touchdowns.

Grambling kicker Marc Orozco was automatic money drilling two 42-yard field goals and a 41-yard field goal.  His career long is 45 yards.

The Tigers defense was stout in the first half of their home season opener holding Bethune Cookman to 14 points. Unfortunately, the Tigers defense finished allowing 523 yards of total offense and allowed 42-second half points.

Alabama State struggled to throw the football in last week SWAC opener. The Hornets completed 13 of 31 passing attempts for 99 yards.  Ellis Richardson completed 9 of 18 passing attempts for 59 yard and Quinterris Toppings completed 4 of 13 passing attempts for 40 yards.

The Hornets found success on the ground rushing for 169 yards. Richardson led the Hornets with 46 yards and one touchdown.

Alabama State passing defense was picked apart giving up 305 yards. Their rush defense allowed 165 yards, for a total of 470 yards.

With both team defenses suspect in the passing game Grambling offense has a chance to get to get into hurry mode and throw the football around the yard to take advantage of the Hornets lack luster passing defense.

Prediction: Grambling 35, Alabama State 17
