Student-run show ‘The Porch’ a hit

Grambling State University Television Center has welcomed their newest show "The Porch" to the broadcast lineup.

The creative mind behind the production is senior Nakita Turner, a Spearsville native.

The idea branched from Turner’s class project into a weekly segment. One of the TV Center producers and senior mass communication major, Morgan Butler, thought the concept could be a hit.

The first airing of The Porch was on March 13. The cast consists of four mass communication majors: Turner, Taylor Mitchell-Smith, Ninfa Saavedra and Lanita Hughes.

The four discuss national news, local news, trending topics and celebrity gossip.

In the next episode they plan to discuss Grambling’s edition of the American’s Next Top Model competition and hit television show, the controversy behind Grambling’s Nursing Program and the popular hit series, Fashion Police.

Smith said they are currently working with Residential Life to get the show aired on a GSU local TV station.

Students should look forward to being able to watch the talk on their televisions in a few weeks.

The ladies gather and select interesting topics for their unscripted dialogues each week. They then decide on the topics that are the most newsworthy.

Morgan Butler, a native of Dallas, is excited about the positive response that the show has had so far.

She said the show can help all the students who are involved to exhibit their individual talents and figure out their strengths and weaknesses.

"We want to incorporate guest appearances and build a live audience to the set," she said. "We would love to see what the students have to say about the different topics and their opinions about the show."

Butler said this is a great opportunity for the young women to prepare for the real world and see if they would like to pursue a career as TV correspondents.

The Porch will be filming every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and everyone is welcome to join on set. If anyone would like to leave feedback, they can in the TV Center or on the YouTube Channel, "MixedProductions11."
