‘50 Shades of Grey’ lives up to its hype

The highly anticipated release of the movie based on the hit novel Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James finally hit theaters Valentine’s Day weekend.

With the novel being bought and read by more than 100 million people, it’s no secret that this enticing movie would sweep sales at the box office. It earned an estimated $100 million in the United States alone and $300 million worldwide in just one week. This made it the top grossing movies ever being directed by a woman (Sam Taylor-Johnson).

The film focuses on the two main characters: Anastasia “Ana” Steele, a recent college graduate, and Christian Grey, an extremely wealthy, young, handsome entrepreneur and CEO of Grey Enterprises.

When the two have their first awkward encounter, you can immediately tell there is an attraction. Throughout the movie, Ana and Christian continue to see each other casually, but the more they spend time together , the more Ana finds herself falling for Christian.

While Ana wants to have what we consider a “normal” relationship, the type of relationship Christian has in mind is anything BUT normal. This leads to Christian pulling out a golden key from his pocket and showing Ana his “playroom” full of chains, leather, whips, and much more, revealing that Christian is a sadist (a person who receives sexual pleasure from causing pain and degradation to another) and wants Ana to be his submissive (the person who receives the pain). Of course Ana is shocked but because she has already fallen for Christian, she tries to go along with it and understand his lifestyle.

Throughout the movie, Christian pursues Ana romantically and physically while also trying to get her to sign a written contract of a submissive and dominant relationship, leaving the movie with a nail-biting cliff-hanger ending.

If you were looking for a romantic movie to see with someone on a first date, this is not it. This rated R film describes in detail the roles of a dominant and submissive relationship, something that would be awkward to see on a first date.

The movie does follow the book quite accurately.

The lead actors, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, did an awesome job depicting Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. A dominant and submissive relationship is not something you normally hear about as a movie plot, which is why it’s a great movie to go see. Something different, with a little edge, and a lot a steamy scenes.
