Lady Tigers volleyball beat MVSU

 

The Lady Tigers following three consecutive losses against conference opponents were desperate for a win as they took on Mississippi Valley State University. 

Grambling State University dropped the previous match against MVSU, and they looked to gain revenge on their home court. 

The Grambling State crowd was buzzing with school spirit as they cheered for a Lady Tigers victory.  

Grambling State was in control early as they stormed off to a 13-5 lead early in the first set. The Lady Tigers were in control for the most part, but the surging Devilettes cut the lead to 3, resulting in a 19-16 score. 

Despite the late surge by MVSU, the Lady Tigers pulled out a 25-21 set victory. The second set started in the Devilettes’ favor, shooting out to a five-point lead in the beginning minutes of the set. 

Cutting a 6-point lead the Lady Tigers were persistent as they kept fighting to trail 11-12 as the momentum shifted. 

With heavy cheers coming from the bleachers, the Lady Tigers looked fierce as they took a 17-3 lead, causing MVSU to take a time out. 

The Lady Tigers smelled victory as they took a 21-18 lead late in the second set, but MVSU kept clawing, tying the score at 21. 

The lead went back and fourth with a 24-all tie in a nail-bitter, but ultimately the Lady Tigers triumphed, winning the set 25-24. 

With a win in the next set securing victory the Lady Tigers were poised for success.  Grambling State fired off to a 6-1 lead within minutes, but neither side looked to surrender as they went score for score. Soon the Lady Tigers seemed to pull away maintaining a 5-point lead late in the set. 

Grambling State was in control with a 23-19 score on the brink of victory, but the Devilettes wouldn’t lie down. MVSU scored two more points before they Lady Tigers won the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.  

Two of the standout performances were from senior Tiara McIver with 12 kills, eight digs and senior Asia Drennon 13 kills, 1 dig. The two accounted for 29.5 points; the Lady Tigers next match will be home November 8 against Alcorn State University.
