6 walk-ons added to GSU men’s basketball squadtbal

After completing four intensive days of tryouts, the Grambling State University head men’s basketball coach has made the final cuts for this year’s team.

The coaching staff selected six walk-ons: Travis Hawkins, Velario Altherimer, Tyron Bain, Dion Watson, Isaiah Patterson and Reginald Smith. They will join four returning players: Terry Rose, Steven Danridge, Brauhnye Turner and Thomas Chandler.

The Tigers head coach, Joseph Price, said he was satisfied with  the results of the tryouts and believes some of the demands of the team were met.

“It was several factors, including the team’s need and academics, which was the most important factor,” said Price, regarding the requirements for selecting walk-ons

Last season, the Tigers finished 0-28, but are hopeful the new additions will bring a new spark to the team.

Price said he was excited to see the walk-ons “hungry” and with a true desire “to be a part of (Grambling’s) program.”

“The most impressive thing was the number of students coming to support the walk-ons,” said Price, who is in his second season as head coach.

“There were more than 150 people in the stands watching try-outs.”

The team will have its first official practice Tuesday.

They will open the season on the road Nov. 9 at DePaul University in Chicago, then travel to play at Marquette University in Milwaukee on Nov. 13.
