Former GSU tennis star Robert Calvin dies

Funeral services were held Saturday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas for Robert Charles “Coach” Calvin, 67, who died May 30 in Opelousas

Most people remember Calvin as a standout tennis player, both at J. S. Clark High School and Grambling State University.

However, his actions off the court were just as impressive.

Calvin’s former students and mentees said he was a great role model and had a pleasant disposition.

Calvin was an avid recruiter for GSU and often took students to Grambling.

His daughter, Yosha Calvin followed in her father’s footsteps when she attended GSU on a tennis scholarship. Calvin’s son, James, also attended GSU. Yosha’s daughter D’Amber Owens is a sophomore at GSU.

GSU alumnus, Eddie Milton Jones, met Calvin when Calvin traveled to Grambling to participate in a high school drama festival.

The two often played tennis together. Jones said tennis is said to be a game of kings and queens.

“Surely this is true, in that Charles Calvin was a gentleman, a thespian and a consummate tennis player. He is truly king material.”
