GSU mourns loss of student

Jamal Brown, a freshman transfer student from Las Vegas, died this morning. He was 19.

Brown, a psychology major, was playing basketball at the Grambling State University Intramural Center with friends on Tuesday evening. After the game, he said he was having trouble breathing. Soon after, he was rushed to Ruston’s Northeastern Louisiana Medical Center, where he was treated. He was in the intensive care unit until he passed shortly after 10 a.m. today.

“Based on what I understand, Jamal was a wonderful young man, full of energy and life,” said Frank G. Pogue, president of Grambling State University. “He wanted to attend Grambling since he was 14 years old. We are glad he had that opportunity, and he will always be a part of our family of Gramblinites.

Funeral services and burial will be in Las Vegas, and arrangements are being coordinated by the family.
