Bookbag giveaway draws a crowd

Last Saturday, the Gamma Kappa Sigma and Beta Mega Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated held their annual Big Book Bag Giveaway at the Grambling Recreational Center.

Over a hundred local students and parents flooded the center seeking school supplies and toys such as: scooters, movie passes and fans.

Event coordinator, Andrea Dillon said the reason for the giveaway is to make the beginning of school a little easier for families.

“The goal of the giveaway is to help those who are in need,” said Dillon. “We provide food, school supplies and offer contest for prizes.”

One hundred percent of items were donated said Dillon. Raisin’ Canes donated book marks where students have to read at least seven books to receive a free Raisin’ Canes meal.

The event benefited students in grades K-12 and was offered much more than school supplies, but also life lessons.

The Grambling Police and Fire Department, Grambling State University Police Department, Counseling Center and Entertainment Inc all participated in the community wide event. Law enforcement provided finger printing and safety lessons. While the Counseling Center educated students on bullying.

“We don’t want the stigma that all we do is arrest people,” said Lt. Bobby Washington. “We are here to serve the community.”

In its second year of existence, Dillon hopes to pass last year’s number.

“Last year we served 199 students. This year we hope to serve over 200,” says Dillon.
