G-Man picked in MLB draft
Tigers center fielder Eldred Barnett was selected 897th overall in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft by the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night.Barnett is the second Tiger to be selected in the MLB. The Baltimore Orioles took Jeremy Shelby in the 38th round of the 2010 MLB draft.

After hearing the news, Barnett tweeted, “The wait is over just got picked 29th round I want to thank God and all my friends family and other supporters.”

Barnett, a Benton native, played 41 games, led the team with a .355 batting average and had 59 hits. He was named to the SWAC All-Conference first team and the 2011 SWAC Tournament All-Tournament team.

Basketball tourney on tap
Attention, all boys grades 6-11. The Boys and Girls Club of North Central Louisiana is sponsoring a basketball tournament at various locations in Ruston on June 17-19.

The registration fee is $250 per team, with a three-game guarantee. The deadline to register is by 5 p.m. June 13.
The games will be held at Ruston High School, Ruston Junior High and I.A. Lewis Elementary. All gyms are remodeled and air conditioned.

RPAR offering swim lessons
The Ruston Parks and Recreation Department will offer swim lessons.

The lessons will be available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 5:15-6:15 p.m. June 20 – July 1.

The cost is $45 for residents and $55 for nonresidents.
