Canterbury Association initiates contemporary service

The Canterbury Association (CA) of St. Luke’s Chapel of Grambling was in charge of the 10 a.m. worship service on Sunday, April 3. The vicar, The Rev. Thomas Nsubuga informed the congregation present that the first Sunday of every month had been designated to contemporary worship where students at Grambling State could come and serve or lead worship. In the first service of its kind, the Canterbury Association took the lead with Jermilia Charles and Joanne Felix reading the first and second lesson respectively while Phillip James chanted the Psalm. In addition, the rest of the members served as acolytes and performed a skit to dramatize the Gospel lesson from John 9:1-11.

Each character wore an outfit to portray a particular character. The narrators were Brittany Scales and Melody Uche. The Rev. Connie Breaux, director of Campus Ministry at Grambling State University delivered the sermon.

Previously, during the week of transfiguration, 14 members of CA were accompanied by their coordinator, Grace Tatem, Rev. Connie Breaux, and members of Campus Ministry to a four day community work in New Orleans where they provided community services to two churches, one Methodist and one Episcopal, during their stay.

After attending and taking part in the worship service at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, they served meals to the homeless and, at St. George’s Episcopal Church; they did chores that will assist the church in raising funds for the poor of the community.

After the contemporary service, the members of Canterbury, other students from the GSU campus, and members of St. Luke’s remained for a period of fellowship and refreshments. During this time, the members of CA showed a video of their experiences while in New Orleans.

The other students who participated in the service included, Luestar Felix, Mary Walker, Ridele Ejoh, Carlton Regis, Yaemi Fevrier, Dimitri Coates, Marcus Leon Jr, and Sherrann McVane.
