Baseball team wins on the road

COMPTON, Calif. – Grambling State University was well represented last weekend by the baseball team in Compton, Calif. as they won two out of three games in the Urban Youth Invitational in Los Angeles.The Tigers defeated Bethune-Cookman in game one by a final score of 5-3. Senior Adrian Turner, who batted 3-5 and pitched a solid eight innings on the mound, led the Tigers at the plate.

On Saturday, the Tigers defeated in-state rival Southern University by a final score of 8-4. The game was broadcasted live on MLB Network and MLB.com.

Coach James Cooper was just appreciative for the opportunity.

“It was a nice stage for the nation to see some HBCU baseball.” Cooper stated. “I’m glad that so many big leaguers were here for their support at the Invitational. We were just happy to be invited.”

The tournament was brought together was by Major League Baseball’s first Urban Youth Academy. It hosted three Historically Black Colleges and Universities for the first time in this brief four-year history.

The Tigers return home Saturday to face Southern at noon.
