GSU English Department to sponsor poetry contest

The Department of English invites students to submit poems to the Annual Poetry Contest. The winning poets will receive a $100 prize for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place. In addition, there is a $50 prize for the best formal poem and a $50 prize for the best hip-hop lyric.

Also, the department plans to publish the winning poems in Scribia, the Grambling State University student literary periodical.

Any of the varied forms of poetry are accepted: sonnets, pastorals, georgics, love poems, political satires, verse epistles, rondeaux, haiku, jazz poetry, blues poetry, scat, rap, rhymed verse, blank verse or free verse.

To facilitate blind review, all poems should be sent as e-mail attachments without any identifying information in the attachment itself.

Contestants should identify themselves by their full name, address and G-number. The titles of all the poems attached should be listed. Send poems to wilsonh@gram.edu and clawsonj@gram.edu.
The deadline is Feb. 18.

Students interested in submitting entries or joining the staff of Scribia, no matter their major, are encouraged to contact Dr. Mica Gould at 318-274-6114 or Dr. James Clawson at 318-274-3204.
