GSU’s Shelby drafted by Baltimore Orioles

Grambling State Tigers senior outfielder Jeremy Shelby was taken in the 38th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft by the Baltimore Orioles. The Lexington, Ky., native becomes the first Tiger to go in the MLB draft since current interim head coach James Cooper was taken in the 33rd round as an outfielder by the Houston Astros in 2004.

Shelby, 2010 1st team All-SWAC, led the Tigers batting .360 with 68 hits, 50 runs scored and 42 RBIs.

He also recorded 15 doubles and six homeruns and was 21-of-24 in stolen bases.

“It’s really been a great day. Right now I’m just relaxing and enjoying some time with my family and waiting for the call to find out where they are sending me,” said Shelby. “This has truly, truly been a blessing.”

“I believe the Orioles have made an excellent decision by drafting Shelby.

“He is a complete baseball player with room to get better. He has the range to play centerfield and arm strength to play right field.

“He can hit for average power and is a good base runner,” Cooper said.

“I wish him great success in the future because the road to the big leagues is a tough one.
