Counseling center offers varied services

The student body has been getting familiar with campus Student Counseling Services. Located in Foster Johnson Health Center west wing, the counseling center is free to all students who are currently enrolled at Grambling State.

Started in 1986 by Dr. Andolyn Harrison, the SCS main focus is to improve students’ personal development and to promote mental stability.

The counseling center now has three active counselors along with student workers.

The staff at the SCS understands the pressure that young adults are under, from financial problems to relationship problems.
It is important that the student body maintains mental stability in order to perform at the academic levels expected said Dr. Colleen Speed, director at SCS. Assisting Speed in the center are Diane Hassen, office coordinator, Tundra Turner and Miranda Warren, counselors.

There are a multitude of student services that the center provides.

One in particular is SCS after-hours program, which is a 24 hour on-call service that has a licensed professional counselor available for emergency calls.

During this school year many students took advantage of the individual and group counseling services offered at SCS.
With the economy in a recession it is not unusual for students main concern to be financial ones, Dr. Speed said.
SCS is intended for the students to come and let go in a calm environment. A special feature offered at the center is a relaxation room.

This room is designed for anyone to come and unwind with massage chairs and serenity tapings of the ocean handy.
The center provides outreach programs on diverse topics as well.
