Grambling High School about to kick off basketball season

The Grambling High School Kittens’ 2009-10 basketball season begins with the jamboree today in Ruston.
Kitten among other teams will face off in a tournament on the court. This tournament will give us an all exclusive look at them and we will see how these guys improved from last year. The Kittens’ basketball program is on the rise under the new leadership of head coach Chris Oney. He took this team to the quarter finals last season.

This year, Kittens’ young, refreshed and eager team is ready to make their stride towards success. They finished up their off season workouts last Friday, when they hosted Peabody Magnet School at home in a scrimmage game. Coach Oney breaks down what his group of players did over the off season and the outlook on the upcoming season.

“Last year, we had a lot of young guys. They were all disappointed with last season lost in the second round to Arcadia, which I thought was one of the best teams in the state.

“And the day after that game, they immediately started getting better for this year, disciplining themselves in strength, conditioning and watching film. Its really has been a good off season. This has been one of the best off seasons we had since I’ve been here.”

Five returning starters from last season will establish the experienced side of the Kittens. When asked about his thoughts on the jamboree, Oney kept it simple.

“The jamboree is nothing but a jamboree. It’s exciting because it’s the start of the season. After the game, everybody who plays record will be zero-zero. I was just letting the guys know that the jamboree is just the final dress rehearsal before we actually get started playing.

Oney and his staff are ready for the Kittens’ season.

“My goal is going to be the same every year, and that is to win the last game we played. If you win the last game you played, then hopefully you are holding up the trophy.
