Zion Traveler Baptist Church of Ruston will host a Breast Cancer Awareness seminar at 11 a.m. Oct. 24 in the Family Life Center.
The guest speaker will be Dr. Cynthia M. Jones, chief of staff at Northern Louisiana Medical Center. She has 13 years of experience in surgery. Jones is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School. She moved to New York where she completed her internship and residency in surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center. Once completing residency she joined the staff and obtained specialized training in advanced breast diagnostic techniques.
She served as an assistant clinical professor of surgery in general, laparoscopic and trauma surgery. She became director of breast surgery, during which time she developed a multidisciplinary Breast Surgery Service. The service provided comprehensive breast care and involved the Departments of Pathology, Plastic Surgery, Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Social Work and Physical Therapy.
She was largely responsible for obtaining a $500,000 grant to improve services for her patients. She was chosen in 2003 to be a member of a delegation of surgeons traveling to Russia to discuss surgical health care and participate in an exchange of ideas.
