Lady Tigers, A&M Bulldogs undefeated in first day

Posted: 11/14/08The GSU Lady Tigers and Alabama A&M Lady Bulldgos trumped all of their opponents in order to remain undefeated in tournament play. Today was the first day of the SWAC Volleyball Tournament.

The day started with upsets with nearly all matches of the first round going to five sets.. Southern University upset the Mississippi Valley Delta Devils to move into the winner’s bracket. Alabama A&M, fourth seed for the East, upset Prairie View, the second seed of the East. Also, Jackson State was upstaged by Texas Southern.

The Lady Tigers were the only number one seed to win in the first round, taking care of Alcorn State handily 3-0.

The second round’s most intriguing matchup was Mississippi Valley and Prairie View. Valley, last year’s runner-ups, tried, but could not hold a surging Prairie View team. The Lady Panthers held strong and ended Valley’s hopes of earning redemption.

Alabama A&M knocked Southern out of the winner’s bracket and into the loser’s bracket, while GSU quickly defeated Texas Southern, pushing them into the loser’s bracket.

Alcorn found themselves eliminated from the tournament after Jackson State quickly took care of them.

The third round featured Prairie View against Texas Southern and Southern against Jackson State. Jackson State, the number three seed of the tournament, quickly dispatched of Southern University, sending them home.

Prairie View also eliminated Texas Southern quickly, setting up a Prairie View and Jackson State match for tomorrow.

GSU will face Alabama A&M Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Assembly Center, while Prairie View and Jackson State will meet in the Men’s Gym at the same time.

Jackson State is looking to win it’s first SWAC Championship in its program history, while Prairie View is looking for its second ring in three years.

Alabama A&M is looking to break a tie for number of championships held. Alabama A&M and Texas Southern both have won six titles.

The Lady Tigers are looking to win their first championship since 1997, a team current Head Coach Kim Young played on.
