Can I only fast from food?

Fasting according to Wikipedia is the act of abstaining from food, drink or both for a period of time. “And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting,” Daniel 9:34. Christians use the principle of fasting to show their devotion, respect and or thanks to God. Some use fasting as a means to receive something from God (i.e. strength) or to intercede for someone that is in need of a spiritual uplifting from God. But before a person can exercise the principle of fasting one must first have faith.

Faith that God will do what He said He would do, and faith that the sacrifice that you are making with your fast will make you stronger in all aspects of your life.

But can one only fast from food? I know that when the Bible talks of fasting it speaks of people fasting from food, “Moses twice spends forty days on Mount Sinai without eating or drinking, and in mourning over Israel’s sin.” Exodus 24:18, 34:28, “Saul places the army under oath not to eat until evening on the day of battle with the Philistines.” 1 Sam 14:24-46. But what if food is not your weakness and it would not bother you to not eat a certain type of food for a set number of days. What if your always thinking negative about everything, and can’t find a positive thing to say.

In my opinion, not saying that the teaching about fasting in the Bible is wrong (I would never fix my mouth to say that), I think that when we decide to fast we should choose to fast from something that would require us to trust in and have faith in God to help us through, like shopping, video games, cursing, sex etc.

Through my recent fasts I’ve come across two different types of fasts that were very helpful and uplifting to me. Try these:

This is a 40 day fast that targets your brain. Daily emails are sent to your inbox and pastor Gregory Dickow teaches us how to fast from wrong/negative thinking. “As a man thinketh, so is he.” Proberbs 23:7

With this fast pastor Franklin shows us different types of fasts, such as The Daniel Fast, the 3 day fast, Partial fast, liquid fast, etc. Each fast is accompanied with bible refrences to explain how the fast was derived. Each fast is also accompanied with recipies and testimonalies from participants who have completed the fast or from those who are currently fasting.

It doesn’t matter what you fast from or how long you fast just as long as your faithful, and have your mind on God and God alone. Good luck on your fast!
