The Office of Retention sponsored a workshop titled “Avoiding Plagiarism by Learning the Research Process” recently. Many students fail classes or receive lower grades because they are tempted to plagiarize their essays and research papers. As a result, Veterine Simpson, the director of the Office of Retention, believed that students would benefit from a workshop that teaches them ways to avoid plagiarism.
The workshop emphasized ways to avoid plagiarism, including learning how to summarize, paraphrase, synthesize and document effectively. The workshop was held on Feb. 26 in Brown Hall Room 209, a computer lab. Students were able to work hands-on in the lab to learn the research process. The workshop presenters were Dr. Beatrice McKinsey and Dr. Pamela Payne, professors from the English Department.
The Office of Retention is funded by Title III.
