Kappa League to develop youth leadership in Lincoln Parish

The illustrious brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity have initiated their tremendous group of mentors in their Kappa League program. The first official meeting was held this past Saturday where ten high school students from northern Louisiana were taken under the wing of this vigorous group of men. The Kappa League is a male dominated series of activities designed to help male high school students, who are college bound develop their leadership talents and to help them reach their challenging endeavors.

The activities that are provided to the young men are both challenging and rewarding experiences to enhance their lives. The goal of the league is to help the students achieve worthy goals for themselves and to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

Even though the young men are not chosen by scholarship but that aspect of their academia will be advance by the teachings and occurrences.

The Polemarch and Guide Right Chairman Justin C. Gay of the Gamma Psi chapter sees this program as being the supportive to the young men who strive for an education.

“I want all of the men to take something out of it,” Gay says, I want them to look back and say the Kappa League really helped me in this aspect of my life.” The program desires to expand their reach not only from Grambling to Ruston but to Tallulah and Jonesboro also.

Even though this is a Kappa-supported program, everyone facilitating does not have to be a member of the fraternity. The members of the fraternity are making use of leaders in the community. “We want to bring variety to the league if being legal, educational or Christian,” said Gay.

The advisor of the Gamma Psi chapter Otis Jones believes strongly in this motto “Developing Leadership; our Salvation.”

Jones said, “We have to develop our leaders young, we can’t assume just because students are in college that they are leaders.”

The goal of the Kappa League is not only to reach those who aspire to attend college but it is to inspire and support those who do not perform as well in the classroom as others may.

“I want to see the young men who are participating in the league attend college and be inspired to do more than being a student”, said Jones.

This remarkable program will not stop once the high school students enroll into college but the men of Kappa Alpha Psi will continue to make sure that they are taken care of such as housing, financial aid, and administration.

The men of Kappa Alpha Psi have been superb benefits in the community and having an active mentoring program will definitely make changes in high school education. Jones wishes that Grambling would step up and be more apart of what the Kappa League is accomplishing.

“We plan to branch out so that more and more students will be active in the program,” said Jones.

For recognition, Jones says publicly that Gay is a remarkable asset not only to Gamma Psi, but is an asset to the Kappa League who has orchestrated this program from the beginning.
