ULM beats GSU by 2 touchdowns

Defeating SWAC opponents was easy for the GSU tigers but this was not, this was ULM and ULM is a Division 1-A school. The Grambling Tigers traveled 30 minutes up I-20 to take on the warhawks of ULM Saturday in the first ever meeting between the two schools.

“It was a nice thing to do,” Grambling’s safety DeMichael Dizer said. “For this to be the first game between the two schools meant a lot and hopefully we can do it again.”

The Warhawks jumped out first scoring on their first possession of the game when Calvin Dawson ran 21 yards making the score 7-0.

Grambling’s defense would answer on the next ULM possession with an interception by Dizer who returned the interception for a touchdown making the score 7-7 at the end of the 1st quarter.

“The quarterback did not look off the zone,” Dizer added. “I was in a good position and I made a play.”

ULM took over in the second quarter scoring twice to increase their led to 21-7 going into halftime. The Tiger offense had only 45 yards in total offense and did not convert on any third downs in the first half.

In the second half the Tigers showed signs of life when Brandon Landers connected with Nick Lewis on a one play, 65 yard touchdown pass on their first possession.

“I told them to just throw it up and I will make a play,” Nick Lewis said. “That is what happened and that is what I did.”

After a block field goal, ULM increased their lead and put the game away after Calvin Dawson scored his second touchdown of the day making the score 28-14.

The Tigers will have two weeks to think about the loss and prepare for Southern University in the Bayou Classic.
