Campus ministry director reflects on a semester of service

Wow! 2007 is almost over, and we are now preparing to Dive-Into 2008! Wesley Foundation serving Grambling State University has had an exciting Fall Semester. The Wesley Foundation, is the led ministry of the University Faith Community, the “gate keeper” of the Spiritual Life at Grambling State University. Many ask why is this? Well, Wesley Foundation is a trusted name in campus ministry around the world. We are accountable to and for the ministry that we are charged to keep. We are Open Mind, Open Hearts and Doors to All God’s children!

Campus Ministry at GSU, is a Life Changing experience for the students, faculty and friends involved. Campus Ministry Makes A Difference at Grambling State University, the community and in local churches, especially Trinity UMC, in Ruston.

This Fall semester we began in a slow tempo, however by mid- term we were moving in a “Presto” tempo! Our mission’s objective is centered within three points: spiritual servant, leadership, community service/mission and spiritual discipleship. At The Wesley we meet the person where there are Spiritually and journey with them to a place God has purpose for them.

This academic year, campus ministry is training up new leadership. I would like to share how God is raising new leadership in this ministry. Four years ago, GSU campus ministry participated in a Discerner’s Academy at the Wesley Conference Center, Woodworth. There were many high school students attending the retreat. Several GSU -SWAT members participated also and shared their relationship with campus ministry and God.

A young man from Baton Rouge, in the ninth grade observed the SWAT team, and was touched. I met him, gave him a business card, and closed with “When you come to GSU, call me.” Four years later, I received several calls from this young man on my answering machine.

On the Sunday the freshmen arrived, campus ministry held a “Welcome celebration.” I checked my calls, and there Shelton’s voice was on the phone…saying “I am here.” We prepared a bag, and I went to his dorm to welcome him to GSU and campus ministry. Today Shelton is one of my committed, growing leaders.

Campus Ministry is a safe place, a place like home for our students who are seeking a relationship with God. However, to continue to be that place in the mist of Shelton’s and other college students journey, we need your help.

I am asking that you invest in campus ministry at GSU through you prayers and monetary support.

We are now located in our own space of over 3,000 sq. feet on campus, however we must take care of the janitorial maintenance, and we need paper goods, (plates and cups) flatware and Food.

Your gift will help Campus Ministry make a difference in many students’ lives. We ask that your church, will remember us as an outreach mission, and place us in your 2008 budget.

Our 2007 budget is $52,000, 26 percent of this came from the Louisiana Annual Conference of Higher Education. We seek your gifts as an end of the year donation to complete our budget.

Thank you for making a “Difference” in campus ministry.
