GSU offers free classes for Katrina, Rita victims

Grambling State University has received a grant to offer training/workshops to low and middle income families particularly victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita in the Ruston/Grambling area beginning September 4, 2007 through March of 2008. These training/workshops are designed to help these target groups toward economic self-sufficiency. Below is a list of various training and workshop areas that will be offered during the Fall of 2007 and beyond:Participants will benefit from this program in several ways. They will be provided with the environment and other tools needed to become financially and economically stable in today’s society at no cost to them. The participants will be shown steps on how to start a business, including counseling, referrals, tutoring and study materials to earn their GED. Job search/placement activities will be undertaken for the target group. Participants will also be taught how to use the computer to include adult reading, math tutorial and other exciting educational and professional opportunities.

These trainings will be offered in the form of workshops and seminars for the entire Fall Semester of 2007 and beyond. The instructors are well qualified and capable of training the participants. Meeting times will be mornings, evenings and Saturdays. The Computer Lab with Internet facilities will be open daily and accessible to participants.

The Math Tutorial, Reading Tutorial and Adult Literacy programs will be as scheduled – 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. MWF for Math, and 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. TTH and 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Saturdays for Reading/Adult Literacy program. The location will be at the new Community Development Center at Grambling. Everybody, particularly the Katrina and Rita hurricane victims, is encouraged to come for the free training activities/economic empowerment activities.
