Foreign language student stands out

Mozella Bell, a GSU student, was recognized as an Outstanding German 102 student by the Southern University’s Department of Foreign Languages, on Sunday, April 26. How does a GSU student receive an award from Southern’s Dept. of Foreign Languages? GSU along with Southern and three other schools (Univ. of Louisiana at Monroe, Nicholls State Univ., and Univ. of Louisiana at Lafayette) all help to form the Louisiana Foreign Languages Electronic Learning Consortium (LaFLELC). The Consortium offers compressed video courses in French, Spanish, and German. The Consortium was established in January 2005. GSU received a grant from the Board of Regents in 2004. This grant makes it possible for Bell to attend class three days a week in the library. The mission of the Consortium is to enhance academic degree programs in foreign language by providing inter-institutional electronic learning courses that would enable the participating institutions to combine the student populations and share the expanded faculty expertise. Bell began taking German last fall and has almost completed the second level. She stated that if another German class is offered next semester she will definitely take it. " German is fun and interesting," says Bell. According to Dr. Chimegsaikhan Banzar, the Department of Foreign Languages Coordinator, GSU will offer Latin and Arabic this upcoming fall semester. Dr. Banzar receives the tests and administers them to Bell and other students; however, students must wait until the teacher tells them to begin. Banzar also teaches French Phonetics through the LaFLELC.German is fun and interesting," says Bell.
