Safety tips offered for spring break

Grambling State University’s official spring break begins March 26. Most students already purchased plane tickets and hotel reservations for their mini-vacations away from tests, teachers and scantrons, but before leaving dear ol’ Grambling in the dust, be mindful of these tips to remain safe while on your spring break: Protect yourself. Women are more likely to be victims of sexual assault than men. If you plan on engaging in sexual activities, remember to keep condoms with you at all times.
n Wear sun block. Although getting a little fun in the sun is all right, excessive and unprotected sun exposure can result in premature aging, changes in skin texture, and skin cancer. Always wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15.

Eat healthy. It’s OK to have a few french fries and a soda while vacationing, but try not to overdo it. Remember: SpringFest is one week after we return from spring break.

Travel in groups. The Natalie Holloway incident should be an eye-opener to remind students to always travel in groups of three or more and to never stray away from your friends or loved ones.

If vacationing near the beaches, be aware of rip tides and currents. They’re narrow sections of current too strong to swim against and will take you quickly offshore.

Limit alcohol intake. A motor vehicle accident kills someone every 31 minutes and injuries a person every two minutes. If you plan on drinking, delegate a designated driver in order to refrain from any accidents.

Watch your beverages. Date rape drugs are odorless and cannot be detected once they have been placed into a drink. If you happen to leave your drink unattanded, replace it with a new one and discard the old one.

Keep identification with you at all times.
