Grambling State Univer-sity has been chosen as the Tom Joyner Foundation's School of the Month for August.

The syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Sky Show allows listeners to donate throughout the show using a hotline number. The show, which reaches more than 9 million listeners across the country, also awards scholarships to students.

New ULS president to address grads

Micheal "Randy" Moffett, who was selected late last month to head the University of Louisiana System, will be the graduation speaker at Grambling State.
Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. July 25 in the GSU Assembly Center.
"I am extremely honored and pledge to do everything I can to be successful and help the system be successful," Moffett said when he was named ULS president.

Summer numbers down from last year

The total enrollment for the Summer School Session I 2008 was approximately 1,246 and Session II is 1074, according to the Registrar's Office.
Last year's Summer Sessions consisted of more students, having in the first session 1,257 and second session 1,317.

City holds annual Juneteenth celebration

50 soar in High Ability

"Since the administration of Dr. Joseph B. Johnson, the High Ability Program has been around," said Veterine Simpson, director of Retention and the High Ability Program. Simpson has been the program's director for three years.
The High Ability Program at GSU is enrichment for high school juniors (rising seniors) who have exemplified outstanding academic standards throughout their high school years.

Summer Science Teachers Academy held

Four area high school teachers participated in the 2008 CMAST Summer Science Teachers Academy, which was held May 27-June 10.
Dr. Allen Miles, professor of chemistry, was the faculty facilitator for the Academy, which was available to high school science teachers in the area of chemistry.

GSU chemistry major awarded 2008 UNCF Merck research scholarship

Eual A. Phillips Jr., a Grambling State chemistry major, was awarded a $25,000 United Negro College Fund Merck Undergraduate Science Research scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year.
Phillips said that he had seen the scholarship pamphlet since he was a freshman.

The Louisiana Baptist State Convention and Congress of Christian education will meet in Monroe July 20-25. The meeting will be the 135th annual session and the 24th annual congress.
The convention will kick off with an annual musical Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Monroe Civic Center Theater.

Services was held for David Lee Lewis, retired criminal justice professor at Grambling State University, Thursday, June 19 at New Living Word Ministries in Ruston.
He departed this life on Tuesday, June 10 at his home in Ruston.
Mr. Lewis (fondly referred to as "Big Daddy") was born July 25, 1936 to the union of the last Winnon Sr.

It was sixth grade. I was an honor student and had the privilege of delivering the morning announcements. I had to stand on a milk crate to reach the silver microphone that was perched atop the filing cabinet in the front office.
I cleared my throat, took a deep breath and said, "Good morning, my name is Emeri O'Brien" -- stressing every syllable in my name to make sure that everyone knew who was giving them the news of the day.

Many athletes spend their summers improving their athletic skills. One way they do this is by attending sports camps such as the second annual Rod Broadway Football Camp held on the campus of Grambling State University June 22-27.
The goal of the football camp was to provide campers with the finest football instruction possible in all phases of the game.
