Tips to maximize career fair opportunites

Another career fair is on its way to Grambling State University Friday on the tenth of April in the Black & Gold Room. This event sponsored is by The Office of Career Development and Placement as well as The Office of Student Support Services. Employers include IBM, Century Link, Aramark, and a host of other companies, schools, and organizations. This is one of the last career events available for students to get internships and jobs during the summer and after graduation this semester.

“If you are a freshman or sophomore, still attend the event to see how it works and to see all the employers,” stated Beck, “the employers at these events are the same ones that recruit every time specifically from Grambling.”

Beck, a career counselor in the Office of Career Services, gave tips on ways to successfully take advantage of a career fair:

Visit career services: There you can have your resume looked at and reviewed as well as get a list of the employers attending.

Research the employers: Look at the job’s qualifications and what exactly they are looking for. For education majors, there will be schools there to recruit as well.

Come prepared: This includes dressing appropriately, you will not be allowed to enter without the appropriate attire. Come with writing utensils and multiple copies of your resume’. Make you have an outlet to send it electronically if needed.

Have a pitch: You have researched the jobs and know what they are interested in so have a pitch and be able to market yourself. It will help if you may be lacking in other areas, a good interview is key even with a great resume.

The Office of Career Services provides many services to help students choose and work towards a career. The Office of Career Development and Placement and The Office of Student Support Services are located in A.C. Lewis Library- Suite 167. Beck encourages students to “Be prepared, be professional, and be open to whatever opportunities that come their way.”
