G-Men honored at football banquet

The Grambling State University G-Men concluded a well-fought season this past Friday night at a football banquet in the Black and Gold Room. The Tigers finished (7-5) and had a season-ending run against in-state rivals, Southern University.  However, the night was filled with celebration and reflection on the comeback season.

“The potential is (here), and the foundation is built. We have to continue to build on it and be an ever better team,” said defensive backs coach Nate Brown.

Throughout the night, the coaching staff presented the players with several awards for academic achievement and athletic performance.

Senior Anthony Cherry received the award for Offensive Player of Year.

“I was proud to have played here at GSU for the past four years and happy that my hard work had finally paid off,” said Cherry.

Also receiving an award that night was senior Aaron Breed Jr., for Linebacker of the Year.  Breed had a very successful senior season being named SWAC Co-defensive player of the week and finishing sixth in tackles in the SWAC. “It felt great to receive this award after a season I had,” Breed said.

Jonathan Wallace, a junior kicker, won the Academic Award for his 3.8 G.P.A., who also finished with straight A’s during the last season.

Junior Quarterback Johnathan Williams won the Eddie G. Robinson Award, the G-Men’s version of MVP. Williams was a mid-season starter, and he would finish as second team All-SWAC, and lead the SWAC in pass efficiency, pass average per game and total offense.

“I was honored to have received this award and look forward to picking up where the seniors left off in leading the team to a successful season,” said Williams

As the awards ceremony concluded Head Coach Broderick Fobbs gave the closing remarks thanking not only the team, but also staff, Tiger Dolls, alumni, faculty, and students for their tremendous support throughout the season.

The Tigers look forward to the Spring Black and Gold game, which is scheduled for March 21 at the Robinson Stadium.
