GSU wins $50K prize

For the second straight year, Grambling State University has won the Allstate $50K Challenge for Historically Black Colleges and Universities with 35 percent of the votes.

“I am so elated that our illustrious institution of higher learning could pull it off for the second year in a row,” said Erik Johnson, the student government associa- tion president. “It makes me proud that during my term here as SGA President I could help encourage our students and alumni to continue to vote and participate in the Allstate challenge.”

Grambling competed against other HBCUs like Southern University and Howard University for the donation for the school’s scholarship fund.  Last February, 33 GSU students were awarded scholarships from Allstate and the Tom Joyner Foundation at a ceremony held in the T.H. Harris Auditorium. Since its beginning, the Tom Joyner Foundation has raised over $65 million and helped over 20,000 students.

In order for GSU to win, they had to receive the most votes from Allstate’s ‘Quotes for Education’. When going online for an insurance quote, one had the option of picking their favorite HBCU. Each day one had the opportunity to vote for their favorite HBCU. From students to alumni, to administration and faculty, it took everyone to help GSU win.

“I am extremely proud of the faculty, staff and importantly the students and the alumni of GSU for coming together once again to win scholarship funds for the university,” said Ebony Wilson, SGA vice president. “We are #Gramfam because look out for each other and understand that we don’t grow in isolation we grow in community.”
