ms Alumni Scholarship and Charitable Foundation is set once again to assist Grambling State University students to become one step closer to making their dreams of receiving a higher education come true.
This year the DLW Alumni Chapter Scholarship and Charitable Foundation Gala, will achieve yet another milestone in its history. It will pay off the $100,000 endowed student scholarship that was established with the university in 2009, which the university is matching.
“I am extremely passionate about the foundation because giving back is not only something that we should do, it is a responsibility that we all should take part in to sustain our community and our institution of higher learning,” said Veronica Johnson-Williams, one of the foundation’s chairpersons and members of the advisory team.
The theme for this year’s Gala is “Helping to Develop Today’s Students into Tomorrow’s Leaders Worldwide.”
“Each year we have a theme, and it is the driving force to giving back,” Johnson-Williams said. “We wanted to show our sponsors that we aren’t just reaching out to our students, but we are providing hands on assistance through various programs and seminars, preparing future graduates to give back, and helping to develop leaders and role models,”
The DLW Alumni Chapter developed the DLW Scholarship & Charitable Foundation in July 2006 to assist in providing worthwhile scholarships to academically eligible greater Houston area students who attend Grambling State University.
“Being a part of the foundation has actually provided me and the foundation with a strong sense of accomplishment,” said Johnson-Williams. “I had the opportunity to be a part of the inception of the foundation,to see its current state and to participate in the foundation’s growth.”
The foundation's purpose is to better the opportunity for Houston youth to attend Grambling State University. They strive to develop meaningful partnerships with financial providers and remain an asset to the community, while providing scholarships and financial aid planning.
“We would like to thank all our financial contributions as well as those who contributed their valuable resources to our foundation, which has assisted the foundation tremendously in helping one after another student receive the opportunity to receive a higher education,” said Johnson-Williams, a 1983 graduate of Grambling State University.
Each year the Alumni Chapter hosts their Black and Gold Gala, which is the foundation’s signature fundraiser event. The event provides the revenue for student scholarships.
A past scholarship recipient Brianna Polly said, “The money from this scholarship helped me tremendously in reaching my goal to remain a student at Grambling State University. The cost of books and tuition are rising rapidly and this money helped me relieve much added stress that has put a burden on my family and me.
The Gala is scheduled for this Friday, and is a pre-game Affair for the GSU vs TSU game scheduled for Saturday, in Houston, Texas. The gala will be held at the Marriott South at Hobby Airport with the VIP and Silent Auction starting at 6:30 pm. The doors will open at 7:45 pm, and the program will start promptly at 8:00 pm.
