Harmon extends congrats to new leaders

It was 5:45 when Senior Class President, Jared Evans, and I got on our plane heading back to Jackson, Miss. from Washington, D.C. and that made it 4:45 in Grambling. We were so anxious to know who had won the elections because it was a very intense race.

All four of the candidates had their own individual strengths and their own odds.

I am proud to congratulate Steven Jackson on his victory as the newly elected Student Government Association President for the 2009-2010 school year. I know that the Jackson/Hughes administration will do a great job and will continue the accomplishments and goals set by the Harmon/Jackson administration.

I would say it was a great decision for the students to support Steven Jackson, seeing that he performed very well as the current Student Government Association vice president, and his experience will guide him into continuing great work as the newly elected president.

Steven has a very strong and intelligent mind frame to be a student leader. He has done a wonderful job keeping things in order and organized. He was a great president to the senate and a very demanding and motivating person. Steven can not only do what it takes to please the student body, but he also goes above and beyond to keep the relationship alive and healthy between the administration and the student body.

Lamark Hughes as vice president will make the SGA administration a very strong force. Lamark has held many leadership positions at Grambling State University as well as in Student Government Association. Lamark has deep knowledge with the SGA as he helped coordinate the Voter Empowerment team this year and was also the election commissioner for three semesters. Lamark also served as the Junior class President.

I am very excited for the two leaders to join forces and begin their reign as the 2009-2010 Student Government Association president and vice president. I can guarantee that they will do as much work, and possibly even more than the work that was presented in the 2008-2009 school year.

I would like to also congratulate Ahvery Thomas for her victory as Miss Grambling State University. I wish you luck and I hope you are successful in carrying out your platform during your reign.

One thing I ask from Miss GSU and all of the future Miss GSU’s is to remain active with the Student Government Association and the Favrot Student Union Board. This is something that has been rarely seen, and I challenge you to expand your duties and set the bar for the future Miss GSU to come.

Overall, it was a great election and I believe each position was filled with a great person to serve in that position. I believe the Student Body should be anxious and ready for the upcoming events and activities that are scheduled to be presented next year. Once again, congratulations to everyone who were elected and I look forward for you all taking your oath of office on Saturday, May 2 at the SGA/FSUB Banquet and Ball.
