Business students attend conference

Seventeen students and two faculty advisors from the College of Business attended the 34th Annual National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Southwest-Western Region Student Conference held in Houston, Texas on Oct 3-5, 2013.

The aim of the conference was to offer students opportunities to sharpen their professional skills and gain exposure to cutting edge information on industry trends. The students also had the opportunity to network with experts from some of the nation’s leading companies such as Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Dell, KPMG, PWC, Enterprise, Cargill, Grant Thornton, Chevron, Halliburton and more.

Students at the conference were challenged to utilize the resources available to them. Such resources included professional development workshops and technical sessions that covered topics such as The Brand Called “You”, How to Distinguish Yourself in A Recession, Time Management: Multi-tasking, Flexibility, and Punctuality, Surviving and Succeeding in Corporate America, How to avoid Career Eliminating Moves and many more.

The networking sessions were time for students to meet professionals in areas of their interest, and sharpen their networking skills to help them foster mentored relationships.

Students capitalized and secured interview opportunities over the weekend with companies, namely KPMG, Ernst & Young, PWC, Chevron, and Deloitte.

There were total of 13 scholarships awarded at the conference, out of which two were awarded to GSU students. The GSU scholarship recipients were Sabrina Joseph and Stephanie Mutegeki.

Some of the students shared their experiences as they pass challenges that are considered rewarding. They all testified that attending this year’s conference was a worthwhile experience and eye opener.

The 2014 Southwest-Western Region Student Conference will take place on October 16-18, 2014 at Westin Dallas Park Central. Grambling State University’s NABA chapter encourages all business students to make plans to attend next year’s conference to experience other life changing opportunities.
