Tigers remain winless
The Tigers of Grambling State University dropped their 22 consecutive game and remains winless for the 2013 season. GSU allowed Texas Southern University to come into Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center and hammer another loss into the record books. The final score of the game was 52-80.
GSU's Terry Rose finished with a team high 16 points off 6-11 shooting from the field and connecting on 4-9 three pointers. Also in double figures, Will Hornsby finished with ten points, he went 4-9 from the floor, and six of his shots came from behind the arch. He made one.
The Tigers started the game slow and permitted TXSU to jump out with a big lead, 0-9. Their run was capped by TXSU's Ray Penn's two three pointers. Hornsby stopped the bleeding with a steal and layup conversion to bring the GSU Tigers within 7 points, 2-9.
Rose fed off Hornsby's momentum and capitalized with a three pointer, 5-9. Aaron Clayborn, forward for TXSU, answers GSU by attacking the rim and collecting two points, 5-11.
GSU went on a 7 point run that included an additional three pointer from Rose. GSU was within one point when TXSU erupted on a 17 to 2 run to give them some breathing room, 13-28. The Tigers of GSU hung around throughout the first half, not allowing the led to exceed past 16 points. Going into halftime GSU was down by 9 points, 37-28 and outrebounded 20 to 12 by TXSU.
Coming out of the break, TXSU continued to lay down the points. TXSU scored six unanswered points until Rose scored off a three point attempt, 31-45. GSU tried to keep the game close but TXSU's three point game killed the struggling Tigers. The Tigers of TXSU went 13-27, 48.1%, from behind the arch.
GSU's Steven Dandridge made a conscience effort to help his team back into the game. With 14:18 remaining in the game, he scored back to back baskets, 37-46. The Tigers of GSU still trailed by nine points and Dandridge's energized efforts could not stop the freight train force of the TXSU offense. With seven minutes left of regulation, The Tigers of TXSU went on a 15-34 run to finish off the game, more than doubling the points scored by GSU, 52-80. The run consisted of six three pointers made by four different TXSU players and a dunk by Clayborn.
Omar Strong and Ray Penn of TXSU tied for the team's leading scorers for the night with 15 points. Law Johnson-Danner added 14 points. Clayborn finished the game with a double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds for the game.
GSU will get another chance to get their first victory of the season when they travel to Jackson, Miss. to play the Tigers of Jackson State University. In their first meeting back in Jan., JSU defeated GSU 46 to 57 at the Assembly Center. Game time is set for 5 p.m. JSU currently sits in seventh place in the SWAC; they are 5-8 in SWAC and 6-16 overall.
