On Feb. 18, Grambling State University’s NAACP chapter hosted an open mic night for students at the BlacktotheBasics Bookstore.
Blacktothebasics has created a Safe Space for Grambling students. Last Friday students and friends came and shared their talents at the open mic in celebration of the Grambling NAACP chapter. People recited heartfelt poems, and performed music, keeping the audience singing in the process.
Most students said it was their first time performing, while others were showing up to spread the word of their artistry. Regulars at Safe Space Fridays brought warmth and familiarity that pushed others to get up and perform as well, making it a comfortable space and a fun event to attend.
“Black to the Basics is an experience all Gramblinites should experience,” said NaKiyah Schoot, president of the NAACP Chapter. “It’s an experience like none other, and it truly is a safe space. The staff at the bookstore were amazing, and I’m so glad the NAACP here at Grambling State University was able to partner with them for our NAACP week.”
The night was a success according to NAACP members and all students who attended. This open mic event came with gifts as well. University Crossing sponsored the event and was able to hold a raffle for a basket full of movie treats that were given to a Grambling student in attendance.
In the middle of Tiger Village, a place in Grambling that is so close to the heart of the university. So many students have been down that road on Main Street. Some to buy a T-shirt at the Collegiate Shoppe or grab some organization gear at RealiTees, and sometimes to get some wings from Fiji’s. Either way, this block has been a staple in the community and continues to serve Grambling students, Alumni, and the town’s residents.
Blacktothebasics Bookstore is there to also serve you with books by all Black authors. Ranging from autobiographies and young adult novels to healthy cookbooks and children's stories. The store is operated by students and owned by Grambling Alumni. It can be your one-stop shop for educational needs as well as beauty and jewelry. It has shea butter, body oils, and earrings, all Black-owned and intended to serve and make someone feel good.
If you missed this last event, you missed a treat. However, this was not the last one to attend. The bookstore is partnering with more organizations, bringing you safe events that help Grambling students to continue networking and building back our community.
