Grambling vying to land Home Depot grant money
Grambling is currently in eighth place in Home Depot’s “Retool Your School” project.
Home Depot’s “Retool Your School'' Project is supplying 30 HBCUs with the opportunity to win a grant to put towards campus beautification.
If successful, Grambling will be awarded $50,000 to put to good use in the areas of campus that are in need of retooling.
Last year Grambling was awarded $50,000 in the competition. The campus is hoping to repeat this year.
“We were one of the winners for the 2020 Retool Campaign and that project is designed to enhance the furnishings and lighting in the Tiger Den and Carver Hall,” Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Gourjoine Wade said. “As we await the items purchased from last year’s project to be combined with a big win for this year it would be a tremendous benefit to our students and the entire campus community. We need all of our #Gramfam to vote, tweet, and post on IG using the hashtag #grambling_rys21.”
Each university in the competition competes for the most online votes on the official site, social media and official sponsor events. The top ten schools per cluster with the most votes progress forward in the competition to submit a proposal for the available Grants.
Voting ended March 17. The awards will be announced April 14.
Miss Junior Amahjah Wallace, a Chicago native and a Criminal Justice major, said the campus could use the award money.
“Grambling’s campus has an old school, lovely feel to it however in today’s time our world is becoming more modern so I feel as though a more modern look would enhance the beauty of Grambling,” Wallace said.
Wade said on a daily basis students can do a lot to help in the upkeep of campus facilities.
“Students can organize campus beautification projects with friends, in organizations, or just as individuals,” Wade said. “Students can also encourage others to use trash receptacles, don’t litter, and let's work together to keep The G clean! Also, wear your mask and continue following our COVID Protocols.”
