Senior farewell: Beating the odds

Never in a million years did I believe  I would be graduating from college in the middle of a world pandemic.

Since I was 9 years old, I had dreams of becoming a NBA player. I thought that I would be “one and done”, get drafted, and take of my family, but God had other plans.I suffered a season-ending injury during my senior year of high school, tearing my middle finger flexor tendon. Instantly, I knew that my basketball days were over and I had to shift my plans for life after high school.

I was surrounded by Gramblinites my entire life, so it was only right that I chose to attend the best HBCU in the world: Grambling State University!

When I started at Grambling I was a Biology major. After just one semester in Biology, I realized that science was not for me. I failed all my classes and thought about dropping out of college. Instead, I met with  my advisor who recommended that I find something I am passionate about and stick with it. In the end, I chose Mass Communication based on my excellent written and oral skills and my passion for the field.

Since then, I have served as President of Grambling’s Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, made the Dean’s List, become a student ambassador, written for the Gramblinite, and worked for the media bureau. I would not trade my experience at Grambling for anything in the world! I have met lifelong friends, amazing professors, and made memories that will stay with me forever.

Thank you Grambling State University for turning a boy into a man!

My plans after graduation are to find a entry level job and attend graduate school to further my studies in the field of communication.

First and foremost I would like to thank God, my family, friends, my pastor Kendall Pierre who passed away due to covid, President Gallot, the Burras family, Forbes family, Mrs. Wiley, Mr. Black, Mr. B,  Dr.Lee, Mrs. Reeves, Mr. Richardson, Mrs. Peters, Mr. Kyle, Dr. Morganfield, Mrs. Newman, Dr. Ford-Dunn, Dr. Frazier, Dr. Welch, Dr. Edu, Professor Davis, Micheal Meadows, Cecil Holt, and everyone else who helped me on this journey.
