Born and raised in Grambling, Everette Lewis has made it a part of his life mission to make a difference in his hometown.

Lewis, 42, is a sergeant for the Grambling State University Police Department.

“The culture of the University was exposed to me early and I loved it,” said Lewis.

He attended Alma J. Brown Elementary School, Grambling Middle Magnet and Grambling Laboratory High School which were all branches under Grambling State University.

“I joined the military two months after I graduated high school, I served from 1996-2002 while enrolled at Grambling State. The military was my first time being away from family and friends. It taught me independence, honor & structure. It exposed me to different cultures and lifestyles,” said Lewis.

Shortly after leaving the military, Lewis worked at Northeast Support and Service (Ruston State School) for eight years as a Resident Support Specialist 5 (Supervisor). Sadly, Ruston State School was shut down due to a governor mandated issue but Everette Lewis found a new passion in life and wanted to join the law enforcement field.

“I wanted to be of service to my community and help people,” Lewis said.

He initiated his service with Grambling State in 2009 and was employed for two years. He gained experience working as a deputy sheriff for Claiborne parish and returned to work for Grambling eagerly in 2020.

“My role is different. When I was first there I was fresh off the street, I knew nothing about law enforcement but we had great supervisors that taught me so much. Now that I’m back and I’m a Supervisor I want to give back to GSUPD and Grambling State University by teaching young officers from my experience,” said Lewis.

He believes that the campus has also made a great effort to keep COVID cases low by practicing safe practices.

“I think they have encouraged the students, faculty, and staff to be safe by wearing mask and remaining six feet apart. Also, the curfew and no visitation adds in trying to prevent the spread of Covid,” said Lewis.

At the end of the interview, Everette Lewis left with this quote that he lives by …

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” – ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭3:5-6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

• Everette Lewis is reporter Essence Lewis's father.
