GSU football switched to spring as SWAC gears up for interesting season

The SWAC has always been one of the more competitive conferences in college football and it is shaping up to be the same way this season.

Of course we all know due to the Covid pandemic, the season has been delayed until the spring.

There is no doubt that the season and games will look a bit different than what we are accustomed to seeing, but this potentially could be one of the best seasons for the SWAC yet.

The season will be shortened to only six games this year so that puts even more emphasis on each game. For Grambling, they will kick this season off with the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas vs Prairie View A&M on Feb. 27.

This will be a true test right away for the G-Men to come out and play with some urgency from the first snap of the season until the last.

The past few years these two teams have battled until the final whistle.

The State Fair Classic has been an enticing matchup ever since the two teams first began to schedule their yearly contest.

The most important aspect of this season, especially early on, will be to see how well these teams have gelled together knowing they haven't been with each other and built the chemistry they normally would have due to Covid.

“Once we get together, it'll almost be like meeting and learning each other all over again,” GSU Head Football Coach Broderick Foobs said in a recent interview. “It's going to take a lot of team chemistry and team-building activities to grow into what we once were and what we should be in the spring.”

The Tigers look to build on that chemistry. As of late, the team has been engaging in strength and conditioning and regular Zoom meetings to build the bond that the team will need down the line in the season.

The SWAC will be filled with many compelling matchups this season.

Last year it was won by Alcorn State who defeated the Southern Jaguars.

These two teams are always poised as well to be competing towards the end of the season.

This year just like always Grambling looks to regain the throne of the SWAC for the first time since winning back to back titles in 2016 and 2017.

Jackson State is also seeing much deserving hype as well after acquiring Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders as their new head coach for their football team.

Just with that addition alone they will bring in many recruits for this year and future years and remain relevant throughout this conference.

With the elements of additional practice time and spring weather, this football season will definitely be one of our most interesting yet.
